LEEDS, MAINE — With four days remaining before Maine's Republican gubernatorial primary, Bobby Charles holds a commanding double-digit lead over his nearest opponent Jonathan “Never Trump” Bush, according to a new independent poll commissioned by the Bangor Daily News and conducted by SurveyUSA.
The poll, conducted May 28 through June 3 among 466 likely and actual Republican voters, shows Charles leading Bush 34% to 17% , a 2-to-1 advantage , despite being outspent by his opponents by more than 70 to 1. Jonathan Bush has spent millions of dollars in television advertising, negative texts, and outside PAC money in a desperate attempt to stop this campaign. It has not worked.
The results are consistent with every independent poll conducted in this race. Three separate independent surveys spanning six weeks have shown Charles leading by double digits without interruption.
A Coalition Built for November
Beyond the topline numbers, the poll reveals two data points with significant implications for the general election in November.
Among voters ages 18 to 34, Charles leads Bush by a remarkable 37% to 7%, a 30-point advantage with the youngest voters in the Republican primary electorate.
Among independent and unaffiliated voters participating in the Republican primary, Charles leads Bush 41% to 21%, a 20-point advantage with the voters who will decide the general election in November.
"Jonathan “Never Trump” Bush spent millions of Democrat dollars trying to buy this nomination and Maine Republicans said no," said Bobby Charles. "What excites me most about these numbers is not just that we are winning. It is who we are winning with. Young people. Independents. Voters who have never felt like the Republican Party was speaking to them. That is a coalition that wins in November and changes Augusta forever. But none of it happens without Tuesday. We need every single supporter to get out and vote on June 9th. We have built something real here and we are four days away from finishing it."
Built From Scratch Against Impossible Odds
The Charles campaign was built entirely on grassroots and digital organizing, accumulating more than 88,000 Facebook followers and generating more than 28 million views through organic content with no large television budget and no political machine.
Meanwhile combined spending by opposing campaigns and outside groups has exceeded the Charles campaign budget by more than 70 to 1.
Despite that spending disadvantage the Charles lead has remained structurally stable across every independent poll conducted in the race. The Bangor Daily News, in publishing the SurveyUSA results, noted that Charles' "unconventional, grassroots and social media-driven campaign has staying power despite increased criticism from his rivals."
Prediction markets, which aggregate the assessments of thousands of informed bettors, currently place Charles at 81-85% probability of winning the Republican nomination.
RCV Analysis Confirms Commanding Position
The SurveyUSA poll included a full ranked choice voting simulation. The results show Charles crossing the 51% majority threshold before the final two-person round, ultimately winning the simulated RCV count 59% to 41% over Bush.
Among Republican voters who are 100% certain to vote on Tuesday, Charles leads Bush 35% to 15%, a 20-point advantage with the most committed voters in the primary electorate. The Charles campaign believes this survey underrepresents the support that will come on Tuesday.
We Need Your Vote
With four days remaining, the Charles campaign is calling on every Republican and independent voter in Maine to make their voice heard on June 9th.
"We have done the hard work," said Charles. "We have built the coalition. We have proven that a grassroots campaign with no special interest money and no political machine can go toe to toe with millions in establishment spending and win. Now we need Maine Republicans to show up and finish this. Vote Charles straight across on June 9th. Let's make history together.”
